Ukraine
History
The name "Ukraine" is derived from the word "KRAI" which means border. More than twenty years ago Kyiv celebrated an anniversary of 1.500 years of history. However, excavations have shown that Kyiv has been inhabited since the Stone Age.

Geography
Ukraine is the largest country in Europe among those with entire boundaries within the European continent. Ukraine is about the size of Texas. Its territory is mainly a vast plain with no natural boundaries except the Carpathian Mountains in the southwest and the Black Sea in the south. Ukraine occupies only 0.45% of the planet's dry land, but it boasts approximately 5 per cent of the world's total mineral resources.

Culture
Ukrainian is the official language of Ukraine and over half of the people belong to the Orthodox Christian religion. At a contest of languages beauty in Paris in 1934, the Ukrainian language was third after French and Persian on criteria such as phonetics, vocabulary, phraseology and sentence structure. According to melodiousness the Ukrainian language took the second place after Italian.

Business
Industry: Coal, electric power, ferrous and nonferrous metals, machinery and transport equipment. Agriculture: Grain, sugar beets, sunflower seed; beef. Exports: Ferrous and nonferrous metals, fuel and petroleum products, chemicals, machinery and transport equipment.

Famous People
Igor Sikorsky, the designer of the first practical helicopter, was born in Kyiv in 1889. Sergey Prokofiev (1891 - 1953), the composer particularly known for "Peter and the Wolf", was born in Ukraine. Golda Meir (1898 - 1978), who became Israel's Prime Minister in 1969 and the world's second female Prime Minister, was born in Kyiv in Ukraine. Nikolai Gogol was a Ukrainian-born Russian novelist, humorist, and dramatist.
